I bought several documentaries, films and sets on DVD - specifically Chaplin at Keystone from Flicker Alley and the Mutual Comedies 90th Anniversary Edition from Image. My next purchase will be the Essanay comedies on DVD.Does anyone have any idea if any of Chaplin's work from Keystone, Mutual or Essanay will wind up on Blu-Ray?That would depend on who own them. The 'essential' (The Rink, The Immigrant, etc.) Mutual collection on Image came out a while ago, and may be OOP.The features, Modern Times, Great Dictator, etc., came through mK2 to Criterion, so they at least have a pedigree, but the shorts (with or without Chaplin's later 70's musical scores) seem to be up for grabs. I'm sure that the Chaplin Revue will eventually hit bluray. That has The Pilgrim, A Dog's Life and Shoulder Arms.By the way, if you're fan of Chaplin, the absolute best documentary on the subject is Unknown Chaplin.

They reconstruct his dailies into shooting order and show how the shorts and features evolved through improvisation on the set. Fantastic stuff!I actually did pick up that documentary as well as Chaplin: The Forgotten Years. I haven't watched them yet but plan on doing so after I watch a bit more of his work. Quote:On almost all of the films, we had multiple elements from both A and B negatives. There are differences between them.Almost everything we used was a first generation full aperture 35mm nitrate print.

All were scanned at 2K, edited together with new reproduction 1916-1917 intertitle cards, and digitally restored and repaired on a Phoenix Revival system. The 12 Mutual titles certainly look spectacular for the most part (slight fading on a couple of films, but still extremely sharp and crisp). There are so many Keystone films, that surviving material is in a wide variety of conditions and number of generations from the original. A few are barely watchable, a few look like most people expect 'old movies' to look, but a substantial number look very good to truly outstanding. I'm hoping that Flicker Alley puts the Keystones in the best surviving condition onto Blu-ray soon.

Just last weekend I saw a couple of the Keystones (KID AUTO RACES and THE MASQUERADER) in beautiful DCPs at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre. These two and several others would make a wonderful Blu-ray anthology of Chaplin Keystone titles.I hope that the Essanay films get Blu-ray releases from Flicker Alley soon as well.

Criterion is gradually releasing the films still controlled by the Chaplin estate (the First National and United Artists titles).
